How to Choose the Right Outboard Motor for Your Boat

Buying a new outboard is a big decision, and the right choice comes down to matching the motor to your boat, your waters and the way you fish or cruise. Here is the simple framework we walk our customers through.

Start with your boat’s rating plate

Every Australian-built boat carries a plate showing its maximum rated horsepower. Never exceed it. As a rule of thumb, running an engine at or near the boat’s maximum rating gives you better performance under load, while a mid-range option can save money upfront if you mostly potter around sheltered water.

Think about how you actually use the boat

A tinnie used for estuary fishing has very different needs to a half-cabin heading offshore. Portable motors up to about 9.9hp suit car-toppers, tenders and small tinnies. The 15–60hp range covers most trailer boats used in rivers, lakes and bays. Once you head offshore or run a heavier hull, 70hp and up starts to make sense.

Tiller or remote steering?

Smaller motors are usually tiller-steered, which keeps things simple and affordable. From around 40hp most boaters move to remote (forward) controls with a steering wheel, which is more comfortable for longer runs.
